What to Use to Treat Yeast Infections?

Most vaginal infections can be treated over the counter with anti-fungal vaginal medications like Monistat (miconazole) or clotrimazole or with prescribed oral Diflucan (fluconazole).  But these only treat yeast (fungal) infections…sometimes the vaginal infection is caused by a bacteria (bacterial vaginosis) which means it needs to be treated with an anti-bacterial medication.

Currently on the market we have available vaginal clindamycin cream and vaginal metronidazole gel.  For oral treatment, we have Flagyl (metronidazole) and Cleocin (clindamycin) both of which are taken for twice a day for 7 days.  We also have Tindamax (tinidazole) oral medication that can be taken for 2-5 days.  And now there is a new oral medicine Solosec (secnidazole) that can treat vaginal infection (bacterial vaginosis) with just 1 tablet!  The catch is the cost…it is $270 which in comparison:

Metronidazole twice daily dosing x7 days = $10

Clindamycin twice daily dosing x7 days = $15

Tinidazole once daily x2 days = $60

It doesn’t work any better then the other medications but it is more convenient.  Be aware that even after taking the one tablet, you may still have symptoms for 1-3 more days after.
