How to Get the Most Out of Your Coffee

To our dear readers:

The material you’re about to read will help lead you to a life of productivity with the help of my best friend, coffee.  I’m about to reveal exactly how you can reap the maximum benefit from the world’s favorite caffeinated beverage!

Prepare to have your life changed forever.

Just kidding (kinda)!  I figured I’d throw one last (for now) blurb about coffee/caffeine at you before I switch it up a bit.  Check out our other articles on caffeine: “Caffeine Content in Various Beverages and Foods,” “Benefits of Caffeine,” and “Caffeine Withdrawal.”

An average person probably thinks the faster they chug their coffee, the better off they’ll be when it comes to energy, alertness, and efficiency.  Unfortunately, most people are not consuming coffee the “right way.”

If you want to use coffee in a maximal manner, follow these directions closely:

1.  Consume small doses of coffee every hour.  Studies have shown this method of caffeine consumption allows for extended wakefulness, and therefore, greater productivity throughout the day.  In general, caffeine remains at a stable level in your body for about 1 hour, and then slowly clears over the next 3 to 4 hours.

2.  How much is a small dose of coffee?  Well, to keep the caffeine at a stable level, you would need to take in about 20mg of caffeine per hour.  That’s only about 1 oz. (30ml) of your average medium coffee (i.e.  Dunkin’ Donuts, Starbucks) every hour!  So sip away, no need to chug!

NOTE: 20mg of caffeine, or 1oz of a medium (16oz) coffee, is a general calculation, but still a fantastic guideline.  Of course, levels of caffeine will vary between types and sizes of coffee.

If you want to be more specific on your calculation, here’s how you get the exact amount of caffeine (in mg) you need to keep you as sharp as a possible:

1.  Figure out your weight in kilograms (kg).  To do this, you divide your weight in pounds (lb) by 2.2.

2.  Take your weight in kilograms and multiply it by 0.3, as this is how much milligrams (mg) of caffeine per kilograms (kg) of body weight (mg/kg) you need on an hourly basis.

3.  Determine how much caffeine is in your most desired caffeinated beverage to figure how many ounces per hour you’ll need to “chug.”  This calculation was a little too much for me to describe, so if you can’t figure it out, feel free to contact me!

There you have it!  Maybe you were going at it all wrong.  Now coffee (or caffeine) can become your lifeline, true love, savior, etc., too.
