How Much Water Should I Drink?

Drinking water is soooooo good for your health I can’t stress it enough.

I used to be a lousy water drinker – I could eat meals without drinking a drop of liquid, and I could exercise until there was no tomorrow without thinking about taking a swig of water.

Knowing how bad this habit was for my health, about a year ago I decided to put myself through a water challenge.

The deal was that I could buy myself an expensive pair of jeans if I could drink 60 ounces of water every day for 1 month straight…no cheating!  It was rough, but I made it to the end of the month without drinking any less than 60 ounces a day (I’m not lying!) – cha-ching, new pair of jeans for me! J

Once I reached my 1 month goal, I decided to keep it going…my new goal was 6 months straight of drinking 60 ounces of water every day (with 7 forgiveness days – life is busy so I thought it would be more realistic if I gave myself a few days to slip-up on my daily goal).  The reward – laser hair-removal so I would never have to shave my legs again (how awesome is that?)!  You had better believe I reached that goal.

With all of this water drinking, I had fewer headaches, more energy, my skin was not as dry, and my nails did not break as often.  Can’t beat that, right?

Some other benefits to drinking your recommended daily amount of water are:

1.     You lose more body fat (sweet deal if you are trying to lose weight).

2.     You are less likely to get muscle spasms or lower back pain.

3.     It can help you cut down on the amount of food you eat at your meals (another sweet deal for weight loss purposes).

4.     You will be able to fight off infections better.

5.     Your skin will be fresh and healthy (perhaps you will look younger!).

6.     It keeps your brain healthy (that’s where the fewer headaches come into play).

7.     Toxins will be flushed out of your body better.

8.     You may be less likely to have a heart attack

You are probably wondering how much water you should be drinking per day, right?  So, here’s the deal (according to most experts nowadays):

1.     Take your body weight in pounds and divide that number in half – this is how many ounces of water you should be drinking per day (140 pounds = 70 ounces of water per day).

2.     If you exercise, you should drink an extra 8 ounces of water for every 20 minutes of physical activity you do.

3.     When drinking alcohol, make sure you drink an equal amount of water.

4.     When traveling by plane, drink 8 ounces of water for every hour you are on the plane.

5.     If you live in the desert, drink an extra 16 ounces of water per day (YIKES!).

To this day I get my water in….the benefits were just too good to be true.

  1. Cate, if I drank all that water, I would be forever either drinking water or in the bathroom… 70 ounces is a lot, and I weigh a little more than 140. This is not a question, it’s just an exclamation stretched into a sentence.

I didn’t used to drink any water, and now I drink about four tumblers a day, only because I like munching on crushed ice.

Thanks for the article- I’m passing it along to my friends.
