Just a little over a week before we head to the other side of the world – Singapore and Cambodia are on the itinerary.  Ooooh, I’m so excited for the food! 

BTW (that means “by the way”, just so you know), I ran into a prescription the other night at work (or the prescription came to me, I should say) for Colace liquid to be placed in the ear.

I was like, what?  Obviously I was confused and I couldn’t quite figure out why the physician would prescribe the stool softener, Colace for the ear!

I searched for the answer in all of my resources at work with no avail, so I phoned Nova at home for some assistance. 

She Googled “Colace liquid for earwax removal” and found some information for me.

Evidently, Colace liquid is quite effective as an earwax removal agent!  It works by dissolving or loosening the earwax, allowing it to be more easily removed upon irrigation. 

All you have to do is lie down on your side with the affected ear facing up, instill 1mL (about 20 drops) of liquid Colace into the ear, and let the liquid sit in the ear for 15 minutes so it can do its job.

After the 15 minutes are up, rinse the affected ear with warm water (this is the irrigation part) so you can get the softened earwax out of your ear canal.  You can use the “blue bulb” usually found in the baby section as a way to help rinse the ear.   

Studies are a little wishy-washy on whether Colace liquid is more effective than the other available earwax removal preparations.  The good news is that we do know for sure it is an effective and inexpensive option!

You most likely won’t be able to find it on the shelves at your local drugstore.  There will probably be a syrup formulation in the children’s laxative section – don’t use that one! 

What you want is Colace liquid drops.  Ask the pharmacist at the drugstore to order it for you – it should be able to be delivered the next day (depends if you get your order in before the daily deadline).
