Should I take Zegerid OTC?

Hey folks,

About a month or two ago, the pharmacy world saw another medication make the switch from prescription only to over-the-counter status.  If you hadn’t heard already, Zegerid OTC is now available, essentially wiping out it’s prescription counterpart Zegerid 20mg/1100mg!

I put together a little video for you after having a brief discussion with a drug rep while at work.  In the video, I compare Zegerid OTC to the prescription medication Zegerid 40mg/1100mg.

Here’s what I had to say:

Just remember:

1. Two capsules of Zegerid OTC (omeprazole 20mg/sodium bicarbonate 1100mg) does not equal one capsule of prescription Zegerid (omeprazole 40mg/sodium bicarbonate 1100mg).

2. When you take 1 capsule of Zegerid OTC you are consuming about 300mg of sodium…that’s a lot!

3. The sodium bicarbonate in Zegerid does not make it work better than plain omeprazole, so I wouldn’t switch up your medications if omeprazole (Prilosec) is working for you!

By the way, Zegerid is indicated for heartburn due to acid reflux disease, healing and maintaining the healing of erosive esophagitis, and healing a couple different types of ulcers!
