Metronidazole (Flagyl) for C.Diff

What is C.diff?

Clostridium difficile infection is a bacterial infection that causes symptoms from diarrhea to inflammation of the colon.

What antibiotics are most often used to treat C.diff?

Vancomycin (Vancocin)

Fidaxomicin (Dificid)

Metronidazole (Flagyl)

What do I need to know about metronidazole?

Typically oral metronidazole (Flagyl) is used first line to treat mild C.Diff.  The dose is usually 500mg three times a day OR 250mg four times a day for 10-14 days.

Side effects include belly upset, diarrhea, dry mouth, dizziness and it can cause a disulfiram reaction –which means it should NOT be taken with any alcohol –here is a video all about why metronidazole and alcohol do not mix!

Good news…Cost for the whole 10-14 day will be ~$4-$10 total!

We would love to hear your experience with treating C.diff !
