Colace Liquid for Earwax Removal

Hey world!

Just a little over a week before we head to the other side of the world – Singapore and Cambodia are on the itinerary.  Ooooh, I’m so excited for the food!

BTW (that means “by the way”, just so you know), I ran into a prescription the other night at work (or the prescription came to me, I should say) for Colace liquid to be placed in the ear.

I was like, what?  Obviously I was confused and I couldn’t quite figure out why the physician would prescribe the stool softener, Colace for the ear!

I searched for the answer in all of my resources at work with no avail, so I phoned Nova at home for some assistance.

She Googled “Colace liquid for earwax removal” and found some information for me.

Evidently, Colace liquid is quite effective as an earwax removal agent!  It works by dissolving or loosening the earwax, allowing it to be more easily removed upon irrigation.

All you have to do is lie down on your side with the affected ear facing up, instill 1mL (about 20 drops) of liquid Colace into the ear, and let the liquid sit in the ear for 15 minutes so it can do its job.

After the 15 minutes are up, rinse the affected ear with warm water (this is the irrigation part) so you can get the softened earwax out of your ear canal.  You can use the “blue bulb” usually found in the baby section as a way to help rinse the ear.

Studies are a little wishy-washy on whether Colace liquid is more effective than the other available earwax removal preparations.  The good news is that we do know for sure it is an effective and inexpensive option!

You most likely won’t be able to find it on the shelves at your local drugstore.  There will probably be a syrup formulation in the children’s laxative section – don’t use that one!

What you want is Colace liquid dropsAsk the pharmacist at the drugstore to order it for you – it should be able to be delivered the next day (depends if you get your order in before the daily deadline).

Yup, that’s all there is to it!  Let me know if you have any questions by throwing an e-mail to cate@getpharmacyadvice.com.

Lastly, our FREE video course on how you can save money on your prescription drugs is still up for grabs so be sure to get it now at http://www.getpharmacyadvice.com/freegift.html.

Ciao!

  1. I could not find a liquid Colace for the ear. It was suggested that I use a 100 mg Colace stool softener and cut the capsule tip off then use the liquid inside of capsule. Only trouble with that is, there only seems to be about one drop. Should I use multiple capsule?

  2. Hi A.P.

In the future, if you use a needle to puncture the capsule then squeeze out the goods – you should be able to get more of the liquid out! Also, most pharmacies can order the liquid for you -just ask the pharmacy staff!

    Good luck 🙂

  3. I was prescribed colace by my ear doctor just recently, I find it no more effective than any other ear wax removal. Furthermore, I don’t really trust a product that is made to soften stool to be put inside of my ears after all the surgeries I’ve had on them. I don’t recommend this product for anything other than its intended use.

  4. I have tried over the counter methods, doctors have used peroxide, and in the end the doctors have used colace on my ear wax and it is a miracle. For deep hard wax I’ve never found anything to work better. Since I can’t get the liquid I use the liquid pills for my daughter and it’s been so much better than the OTC stuff that makes my daughter cry. While I can understand the concern about using it for its non-intended purpose it really should be a listed use of the product as I’ve seen it work and even had it work on me. I’ve met more than my fair share of doctors who know of it. When I asked my daughter’s pediatrician about it since my daughter was having trouble she knew about it but thought it was more expensive and no better than peroxide. She actually told me to put a couple of drops of undiluted peroxide in my daughter’s ears. I have read over and over that, that is bad so I stuck with what I know and I’m very happy with the results.

  5. Hello
I was in the Hospital 3 day ago for having pain in my right ear 👂 the doctor said that i have massive infection in my ear canal and i have a lots of wax, so they lay me down on my side and put some drops… After 15 to 20 minutes they come back and let me sit back up and put a bowl on my shoulder and press it to my neck to catch the wax and the liquid from my ear… Than they take a plastic syringe full of peroxide water 3% and press the liquid fast into my ear 👂and all the wax come out, like in two days the pain was gone, they used 10mL Docu Liquid, docusate sodium , the tinny bottle have on the cap… Delivers 10mL NDC. 50383-771-10
With thst number you can find it faster, good luck guys…..
